iTunes Praise and Criticism

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, iTunes Music Store is here to stay. The Mac Daily News reports that iTunes does offer it’s users consistent quality, speedy downloads and a great user interface. They go on to state that while they have some other great features, they also have some room for improvement as well. If you are wanting to listen to your music on the go, you are pretty much stuck with using the Apple iPod. The article’s author goes on to say that he felt an “Annoying cult-of-Mac aura” with iTunes.

One area that I agree with him is that iTunes music should be usable for portable players other than just the Apple iPod, after all wasn’t iTunes supposed to be about “convenience”?

[…] I have begun to see increased frustration also from regular consumers. Consider – how much control do you have over music and video you download from iTunes? Consumers increasingly complain about how constraining and restrictive iTunes can be. Can you simply move that downloaded song – which you paid for – onto your favorite MP3 player? Nope. Okay – I concede that you burn the playlist then rip the CD so now you have MP3 files… which no longer have information (song, artist, album, and so on) embedded. As for video – no you really cannot convert that to any other format. Cannot take something – that you paid for! – with you. Unless you use an iPod. Or watch it on iTunes. That is it. […]

Itunes has some serious issues. Why can’t I just see the library on the iPod just like I can see the library on my computer? The interface is completely flawed. I have to disconnect the iPod from the computer to see the files that are on the iPod. I should be able to just grab and drag files on or off the iPod rather than the whole “sync” process. I am very unhappy with the iTunes software.
Also, why can’t I set the podcast to play all. I thought I got around this by making a playlist with all the podcasts. This worked on the computer, but did not work on the iPod.
I don’t think that the “consolidate music” works very well at all either.

What Do You Think?
