Developed for OS X, Rendezvous allows for automatic discovery of computers added to a network. While older versions of OS X relied on SLP for service discovery, OS X 10.2 will be the first upgrade to be trusting this task to Rendezvous instead. Rendezvous does require that connected devices have three specific things implemented. Each of them must be able to:
- allocate IP addresses without a DHCP server
- translate between names and IP addresses without a DNS server
- locate or advertise services without using a directory server
This technology is not limited only to Mac users. Windows, Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD can enjoy the benefits of this useful technology.
