The top 5 reasons I choose to use Vista as little as possible.

The next few paragraphs will be a little bit of ramblings about why I choose to run OS X over Vista at any given time.

1. Driver Support

There is very little support for Vista, even though it has been out for more than a year (As far as I know). Not even Microsoft has made drivers for Vista. I had a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and Mouse combo from when I used XP, and when upgrading to Vista, I came to the horrible conclusion that they just would NOT work for Vista. There were, and to this date are NO drivers for my Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse. How ironic. Getting to third party apps, we see the same thing. There are less and less applications every day giving support for XP, yet they are doing a horrible job at giving support for Vista. I get a fatal missing driver error when trying to run vista 33% of the time, causing me to break things in frustration.

2. Ease of Access

I want to use an Operating System in which I can just hop on, quickly open a text editor with the click of a button, select a layout, type, and then print. Macs can do this. From the start. Windows, not so much. Linux? Forget about it. My advice is to stay away from Linux no matter what unless you like the open source, or like to program (Thats my OPINION!). My Mac saw drivers of a new printer before I looked back at the screen from plugging it in.

3. The Software, Software, and Software.

I LOVE Mac’s OS X. Its incredibly easy to navigate, and looks way better than vista could ever want to be. Who cares if it costs more money to get a Mac with the same specs as a PC? Your not paying for just the computer. Your paying for the hardware, the software, the accessibility, the ability to use OS X, and more.
4. Things not crashing

Viruses. Its a big topic with the Mac/Windows war. The short answer is that YES, Macs can get viruses. Do they? Not much. Not as many people use Mac as do Windows, so making viruses for a Mac isn’t probable as it has little chance to succeed at what it is made for. Viruses could be made for the Mac too, but as far as I know there is no way for a virus to delete or modify system viral files. Aren’t those the good ol’ days? Viruses controlling the apps of your computer, and messing with system files. WHY would windows make the System files as a normal folder like they do? Well, I couldn’t answer that if I had to answer it to save my life. Anyways, things don’t usually crash on Macs. They’re very stable machines, and the OS is very stable too.

5. The ability to use windows.

You want a Mac, I know, but you need windows for work. Tell me about it. This is where Vmware, Parallels, and BootCamp come in. BootCamp im going to go over briefly, because its really only a partition program, but here we go. You can choose to install Vista, XP, or a Linux distro (As long as you have the disk or disk image of the ) and then you can download a drivers disk of apple drivers to use when you get the partition installed. This means you can make a partition, use bootcamp to install it, then run your Mac on that partition. From there you can install the Mac drivers, and you can use Mac functions like you’ve never left home. Partitions not your thing? Ok, then get VMware or Parallels. These programs will create virtual machines inside of your Mac allowing you to use a different operating system in a window as an application on the Mac. Heck, on Parallels you can even run it so you have your start bar, and mac bars on one screen, and your mac and windows apps working seamlessly together! And you can share all your folders!

I hate Vista. I absolutely hate it. And I will continue to hate it.

That is, until I get it. Then I’ll love it. Same thing happened with XP. At least I know it’s going to happen this time.

The whole windows thing with 3rd party apps is a big reason why it sucks so much.

See now, I have Vista Ultimate. And it’s 64-Bit. Which SHOULD suggest that incompatibilities are endless… But I’ve yet to have a single thing I give a damn about not work =/

My Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse works a treat, and all the drivers are fine. Same for my Aurora keyboard. It’s strange to see so many users complain about Vista, and yet I have no problem. From the looks of things, I am probably one of the fewer, but I also just prefer the way Windows is.

Also, when I worked for Yell.com, they had some Macs in the Web-Design part that constantly crashed. Running OS X as well. One guy wanted to show me how stable it was, and it crashed.

Your completely right about viruses though, they don’t profit by targeting the minority users (sounds racist, but you know what I mean), however I don’t run any Anti-Malware or any software Firewalls (I’ve just got my router firewall) and I’m completely fine. The fact is Viruses can only infect your computer if you agree to it. Once you click on that very dodgy looking link (even by accident) chances are that’s their way of saying “Yes you want to download it”. Sensible usage far out weighs Anti-Malware (ala Virus definitions).

I’m pretty set in my ways anyway, I’ve been using Windows (and more accurately Microsoft) operating systems since DOS 3.0, and I’m too used to how they work.
