Mahalo

If I was to name one thing on the Internet that I couldn’t live without then it would have to be a search engine (Google, in particular). These search engines lead you to content that you might be interested in, and even though you may submit a generic query, they’re sure to provide you with an abundance of links to check out. Many companies have tried to reinvent search engines over the years, but when it comes right down to it, people still generally like to meander back to a familiar engine like Google when it comes time to search for something. Despite that, Jason Calacanis is throwing his hat into the ring with a new search engine called Mahalo.

Instead of using some sort of computer algorithm to decide on search results, Mahalo uses real humans. In essence, it’s a search engine without any of the traditional technology. The idea is that you’re supposed to get better results from humans instead of computers, and therefore it’s determining the results by hand. If what you’ve searched for hasn’t been indexed by the team at Mahalo, then it doesn’t exist in the engine, and you’ll be offered results from Google, which I find to be humorous. Until it really builds up its results, you’ll basically be using its engine to search through Google. I can see this being useful in certain extreme circumstances, but other than that, I’ll be sticking with Google, thank you very much. To be honest, I don’t really like the fact that other people get to decide what I should see.

Mahalo for the feedback and checking out Mahalo.com!

It is, of course, in “alpha” and you’re correct that our 6,000 results (and growing) are not gonna replace Google any time soon.

The point of Mahalo is NOT to replace Google or Yahoo, but rather compliment it. Clearly the human results are much better than the machine ones because they are more organized, have zero spam, and have better results that just don’t show up on machine search engines.

Come back at the end of the year when we have 10,000, and again in 2008 when we have 25,000 and I think our value will be clear… for now, well, it’s alpha!

Mahalo again,

Jason

While I agree with most of your comments on the usefulness of this Mahalo search engine, I find your last sentence extremely ironic. “To be honest, I don’t really like the fact that other people get to decide what I should see.”
How do you think the Google search algorithm came to be? It was made by “other people”, therefore you are in effect allowing just some “other people” to decide what you should see anyway. If you don’t want “other people” to decide what you should see, take a walk around the city. Oh, wait, there might be some “other people” out there too.
pffft.

What Do You Think?
