Do Dual Credit. It’s Worth Every Penny.

Let me explain my revelation. You see I went to New Maverick Orientation up at the University of Texas at Arlington on Thursday and Friday. At the end of the orientation on Friday we were able to sign up for our classes. Anyways, before that we saw our academic advisers, mine being Linda McQuaid for Music majors. As a liberal arts degree it requires only 6 hours of math. I realized, I already had this and more with a total of 9 hours of math through the Dual Credit system. For other majors you’ll need more math, but the point is, I spent around $200 per course while if I had to take the same course at UTA it would have been roughly $800-$900 a course. You do the math. If you do dual credit through a local community college (or take night classes if your high school doesn’t offer it) you will save a lot of money in the long roun and you’ll have a really good Freshman year (for music majors at least). I’ll be done by 11:50AM (not counting marching band towards this) every day except Thursdays. So my advice to current incoming high school juniors and seniors is to take dual credit and/or get your AP credit. It is very worth it. My electives are ROTC and scuba diving. I am actually coming into college with 21 hours of credit. If I passed the English literature and composition AP test (or is it language and composition, whichever you take at the Senior level) I will be coming into college with 24 hours of credit. Which is 8, 3 hour courses. So to show you how much I have saved 8 times $200 is $1,600, and 8 times $800 is $6,400. $6,400 minus $1,600 is equal to $4,800. So I’ve saved myself $4,800, which is nice considering how expensive college can be. Now $800 is low for a per course class. UTA is a state run public institution in Texas so it’s a bit cheaper than say Baylor. You do however need to contact your prospective university and check whether they will accept the credits from the community college you will be using. For me at least, I really don’t have to do any math anymore for my degree, which I believe is amazing. I only have to do one history, only one political science course and possibly if I passed the AP Test one English course. I also plan to do some of those classes during the summer at my local community classes to save even more money. Good luck out there.
