The Freedom Writers Diary - How A Teacher And 150 Teens Used Writing To Change Themselves And The World Around Them by Erin Gruwell

The true story behind The Freedom Writers Diary began in the fall of 1994, at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, when an idealistic twenty-three-year-old high school teacher, Erin Gruwell, faced her first group of high-risk teenagers. These teens, a diverse mix of students from some of the roughest neighborhoods in Long Beach, soon made it apparent to the young teacher that they were not interested in learning a lot of facts that wouldn’t help them survive their own life situations. Fortunately, however, for all concerned, a monumental event occurred when Ms Gruwell found a caricature of an Afro-American student and was able to turn the situation into a character building session comparing the found picture which those caricatures drawn of the Jews during the Holocaust. As the session progressed, many of the students began to reveal their personal anger and prejudices, as well as, their own tales of abuse including the battle scars that they had received in their own war of survival.

For many of the students Ms. Gruwell’s methods and educational philosophy was their first exposure to an adult that encouraged them to view diversity as a chance to learn about other cultures, to shatter old stereotypes and to change their lives for the better by ridding themselves of bigotry and preconceived opinions about themselves and others. As they progressed from freshman to seniors under her tutorage the students, found themselves and their attitudes towards each other and learning changing to such a point that they all united dubbing themselves the Freedom Writers in honor of the original Freedom Riders involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

The book itself contains the unbelievably sad, yet quite graphic, and possibly too adult accounts of these student’s lives presented in the form of 150 personal diary accounts. Throughout their diaries, these young men and women graphically describe what they have experienced including detailed accounts of both sexual and physical abuse; explicit street language; and extreme violence. Basically, it takes the reader into the lives of urban America as it reveals the minds of urban youths while sharing the power of a multi-cultural vision.

It is a great book and encourages all of us, young and old alike, to really think about what others may be forced to contend with in their every day lives before passing judgment on them. So while graduating from high school is a normal expectation by many it should be accepted for these teens, it was about accomplishing an “unrealistic” goal. This book was powerfully uplifting, and will inspire all readers not just educators and social workers [tags]The Freedom Writers Diary, overcoming, Erin Gruwell, diversity, Teems, students,[/tags]

Every person should read this book, weather you are black, white, hispanic, or purple polka dotted. It shows that we can change the world if we all work together and remove our differences. If you like the book, the mpovie is good too.

Hi Nicki, I appreciate your input and obviously agree with you. I also wish people would take the time to look past the outer appearance of people and see the inner beauty that abides in all of us. Have a nice evening. Jackie

Dear Tammie

I was glad that you visited my site. Your comments are meaningful and I enjoyed hearing what you had to say. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

i watched the movie and cried like five different times. its really a good movie and cant wait to read the book.

Dear Julia

Thank you for visiting my site and I hope you like the movie. Remember though that when you see a movie first you usually like it better than the book and the other way around. This particular book was excellent because of its real life events that we can all relate to. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

I just watched the movie & I do believe that it was the greatest inside look on others’ lives that I have ever seen. All I could think was “Wow.” I’m sure the book is just as wonderful.

Dear Brittni

Thank you for visiting my site. I spend a lot of time reading and reviewing what I read so it means a lot to me that it helps someone else. I agree with you that the real life commentary is wonderful and I think what they accomplished was amazing. If we can all just learn from their example this world will be a better place. Have a wonderful day.

Dear Bianca

I am so glad that the movie helped you. It is a wonderful piece of work. Yes, you are someone. God doesn’t make mistakes and you were put on this earth to do something that no one else on this earth could do. That might mean that you will some day have a special child to raise or that you might be president who knows. I was also a foster kid and moved from house to house but I don’t look back at those things. You have to look at who you want to be and work to get there. I have managed to overcome a childhood with a cruel alcoholic mom and foster parents some of whom were not what I needed. I worked hard and finished high school and went on to graduate from junior college. You can do this too.

Hang in there kid and let me know how it goes. I will be rooting for you. Jackie

i just hope that the book is as good as the movie.

Dear Patrick

I also hope that you enjoy the book as much as the movie but remember movies take artistic license and aren’t always as factual as the book.

Thank you for visiting my site and have a nice day. Jackie

I just watched your movie in my College Comp English class and it was a VERY powerful movie thank you for sharing it with me. Being a student myself i know how important that one teacher that dares you to look outside the box wish we had more like you

Dear NatalieSerrano

Thank you for visiting my site. I hope you take the time to read the book itself as movies always take artistic license and the book is the actual story of the Freedom writers. It is an inspiring book of real people who had to face incredible odds to get to where they are.

Have a wonderful day. Jackie

just watched the film will be getting book ASAP. It has moved me

Dear Gavin

I am glad that the movie hit home for you. Hopefully you will be able to use what you saw to help others. The book is wonderful and tells the story without the artistic license that the movie used. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

I watched the movie and that was the only thing I could think about for a couple of days…I told all my friends about it and told them it was the best movie I have ever seen…I’m going to order the book as soon as i get the chance…I can’t say I know how hard life was for them cause I don’t…All I know is they are some brave soilders…It would be an honor to meet all them

I thought this story was so amazing. And so was the movie

Dear Bubba

Thank you for visiting my site. I am glad that you enjoyed the movie. These individuals make one realize that they have the power within themselves to change the world. I hope you took that away with you. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

Dear Yasmine

I am sure that these individuals had a lot to overcome and that they had to let go of a lot of pain in their lives. Thankfully they decided to make a difference in the world around them instead of letting what others allowed to happen to them make them bitter. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

I watched the movie freedom writers and it inspired me so much. I’m excited to get the book and read more about the Holocaust. When I first saw this movie i did not think that it was real. I just watched it again today with my mom and she said that it was real and i was so excited as soon as the movie was done i came running to the computer and looked it up and found out a lot about it. well thats all.
Thank-You for your time.

Dear Rachel

Thank you for visiting my web site. I am glad that you want to learn more about such things as the holocaust. The advantage of learning about history is that if people can learn from the past they may avoid making the same mistakes again. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

Dear Josh

I hope that you are able to empathize with those in the book. IT is so important for all of us to learn about how difficult it is for some people just to survive growing up in the world. I am truly amazed by how these young people turned what could have been a disasterous life into one that will benefit society as a whole. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

Dear Anonymous

I am sorry that in your life you witnessed so much sadness. I am proud of you for apparently standing firm in spite of all the bad things that could have pulled you down. I can’t help but think you must have had a good family to make it through without being pulled into the bad things. Good luck to you and have a nice day. Jackie

Dear Yvette

Thank you for visiting my site. I hope you continue to read these kind of books as they are sure to inspire you to be all that you can be. Have a wonderful day Jackie

Dear Daranae

I felt for you when I read your comment. Life is sometimes difficult for everyone but teens always have it especially rough. Remember that part of it is your hormones and the fact that you are changing from a child and the stress is hard not only on your body but also on your emotions. Try to be patient with your life as this time will pass and I know I found that adulthood was much nicer than the peer pressure of high school. I wish you success in your life. Jackie

Dear Megan

Thank you for visiting my website. I wish you the best for your future. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

I have not had the opportunity to read the book yet, actually I did not know the book existed. I just watched the movie this evening and was so moved and inspired by this group of magnificent teen agers and what they face each day of their lives and the passion and love of a young woman and her desire to make a difference. I’m looking forward to the book.

Dear Debbie

Thank you for visiting my site. I am sure that you will like the book but remember that the movie took artistic license that you will not find in the book.
It is indeed amazing that just caring can make such a difference in so many lives. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone cared enough to help others even if it was no more than a smile to someone who looks sad or a kind word to the sales clerk at the store who seems to have had a bad day?

Have a wonderful day. Jackie

I LOVED THE MOVIE BEING A TEENAGER AND KIND OF REALATING TO THIS MOVIE WAS THE BEST THING EVER AND I LOVE THE MOVIE I CAN WATCH IT A ILLION TIMES AND I WOULD LOVE TO MEET THIS PEOPLE………

This is what we need in this world today, We need to make a change. This book is so inspiring, my heart goes out to each and everyone of you, even though I don’t know you all, I have love for you. Never in my lifetime have I ever felt so strongly about something, and we were all put on this earth for one purpose and I think I have found that purpose, I had always known but this is motivation to do so, Thank you so much, thank you

hey
the movie is the best ever!! i am currently reading the book and it is very amazing what the this girls and boys had to go through and they were around 14!!! they are so wonderful and they make me want to do something!

I havent read the book, but the movie brought me to tears. Erin Gruwell is a real life Hero. She’s an incredible woman with a great spirit. Bringing those children and giving them hope when they had lost all hope…ive never been more touched. Im using the story on my blog.

This is a very good book and movie. If there is a movie that i recomend it is this one. I am half black myself so i know what some of these kids go through. That is why i recomend it. I live in a very racist area that i hate very much and would like to get away from here. I know that there are people like me that are going through things like this every day. It sucks when you have to fight to protect your own kind

The movie freedom writers was an awesome movie it made me all teary eyed. I was doing soo bad in school and one of my teachers had even requested i get my ged but when i saw that movie i thought to myself i can’t just give up i’ve been coming to school for 13 years and now almost 14 because last year i had flunked. This movie really motivated me and this is the end of school and here i am with all good grades i passed i am going to be a senior and get my diploma and be the first to get it in my family and i’m going to be soo proud of myself i know i’m going to cry because it is something that i really want…It’s true when u really want something all you have to do is want it that bad to get it and try and u will accomplish….I know i wanted it this much i’m not going to give up until i get it and hopefully move on to college…… : )!

Dear Brenda

I am so proud of you. I also believe that you can do it. Just don’t get discouraged or let people make you feel that you can’t do it. I was raised in foster care and had low self esteem but I kept thinking I was somebody. That no one else was in charge of my life but me. As a result I have received 2 Associate of Arts Degrees, 2 Specialized certificates, and a CA techinology teaching certificate. If I can do it so can you.

Hang in there and best wishes. Jackie

Well I love the movie.I would love to read the book.
It seems awesome.
The movie just inspires me,and so does Erin.

well i was in to the how gang life and thanks to the diary and the movie all that changed

Thank u EREN GRUWELL

I saw th emovie and i thought it was great. it inspired my life and i think if it can do that, it can inspire anyone’s life. this is my favorite movie of all time and i would like to read the book.

My wife and two kids just finished watching The Freedom Writers. What a special movie! Our children are 12 and 9….the nine year old needed a little help from her big sister explaining the movie, but she did get the message from the story. There are some really emotional moments that moved all of us. We plan to get the book. and the kids are watching the movie for the second time tonight.

I just absolutly loved the movie it shows what life is life for people and the hardships they face. It is a movie that i would recomend for anyone. I would love to read the book however I dont know where to find a copy of it though i will do my best to find it and read it though I dont read much I love this story and would like to know more about it!

Dear Meredith

I am so glad that you enjoyed the movie. I have read the book and seen the movie and both are quite good. I think I enjoyed the book the most because it was so factual. The movie was great but with all drama they took dramatic license with it so some parts didn’t hit me as hard as they did in the book. Have a wonderful day. Jackie

I watched the movie today, and after it finished, i saw that it said there was a book about it too. so i went straight on the internet and looked it up. i read it but it stopped on diary 1. i was pissed and started to cuss. lolz…i wanted to read it so badly.

I just saw the movie with my husband and two daughters, ages 7 and 10, and we all loved it. l will definitely get the book too.
It was a powerful movie and inspired me even more to help out in whatever I can anywhere I can….

I just watched the movie with my mom and i thought it was beautiful. I was so touched. some thing in me is touched by students or anyone who is stuck in situations like the ones of the students in the movie but they make the decision to turn their lives around. I love when people see their own potential and dont stop until they reach it.

I’m watching the movie right now i swear to god!!! I JUST BOUGHT IT IT IS THE BEST MOVIE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! But ufortunately i havent read the book yet : (. But I WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jamal, Tito, Andre

This story is very motivating. One of my reviewers said great things about the book. This will open your mind to what determined people are capable of.

truly inspiring film! will be getting the book asap.
the story should be told to all youngsters.
also loved the “i have a dream” tune that is on the film.

i read the book and i was so inspired.i hate it that there aren’t many teachers as mrs gruwell.every teen can relate to the book and the movie.freedom writers needed to prove that they have a voice for the sake of all of us.People like them make the world seem such a better place despite all the awful stuff we see everyday.I can’t even begin to understand what these students have been through but i wish all of you who feel the same the best.Keep going

I am a mother of three children ages 13, 10, & 7. I have a soft heart when it comes to young people and I feel that no matter thier age anyone with something to say is worth listening to. I always say that you can never know what is going on in someone elses life that makes them who they are and that even if you don’t like them there is someone somewhere who loves them very much. My brother spent a long time in Louisiana State Penitentiary he was a drug abuser and made some very poor choices in life but he would help any person he could if they needed him but more often than not people judged him by his appearance which could be threatening with his hard look, large muscles, and jailhouse tattoos however when he died there were so many people there it was standing room only and the people were from every walk of life. I hope everyone who reads this book or sees this movie will understand that in some ways we are all alike.

This book and movie has inspired me. I could relate alot to this book. Especially in this world. There are alot of people are who races, and all we think to do is fight back. Iam sorry but, latinas get a lot of bad feed back. They always say we don’t know how to do shit but, if you look around, will you see a white person landscaping, construction working. No but, you will see then in offices. Whites think they are too good to work in that stuff. We come and work our ass off for this but, do end up being deported. Alot of your compinies are up and working becuase it’s the latin’s who take the good. I don’t have anything against the white’s but, when you go to uor country’s we welcome you. I guees it is George Bushes fault. HE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK HIS DOING, and that’s sad. Yes we should be thankful we are the best countries but imagine all the inecent people we are harming.. How would it feel if people came over here and started a war. Alot of people should stop being the way they are, because we work as hard as the white people do to.

I watched the movie a couple of mounths ago and the movie is really good and i bet the book is really good to i haven’t read the book yet but i want to so when i get the chance i am gonna go to the library to rent it to read……………….. i think they should read this book in school to us cause it talks about some of the thangs we are invoved in like gangs and stuff it don’t matter who you are u can have your problems at school and at home its your bizzness but we are all in this together not solo if u bother me you are gonna have to bother all of my friends …….. their is always gonna be some body at school that you don’t like cause i could name about 100 people i don’t like right now but that just lif u gonna have to deal with alot more dramma than just people that you don’t like lie pere pressure or drugs or something but the point is that we are all in this to gether and i think that thebook speaks alot about that…… sp i think u and me both need to read the book

Just want you guys to know that even for us in Indonesia, this movie has encouraged many of us here….

jus wanted to say that the movie was awesome. i watched it here in india and i was moved. first i was disturbed to find that all this had happened during schooldays to children who have not yet seen the outside world. hats off to the teacher and the students who inspired to give birth to the freedom writers organisation. i hope racism becomes a word of the past and wish for a bright future for all the people… not yet read the book. wishin people all over the world their very best.

i must say that the movie was great. it made me think bout my own life. i cant wait to read the freedom writers diary.

i must say that the movie was great. it made me think bout my own life. i cant wait to read the freedom writers diary.

Thank you,Erin G for being there. I just saw the movie for the first time and I cried many times. It was wonderful. I grew up and went to school in Los Angeles County in the 60’s so I can identify with many of the things referenced here. It is great to know there is a group continuing this work and I will be donating money to this foundation in the future.

heyya
i am a student im 16 from the uk i have seen the film but not yet the book. Ive jus order it from the internet cant wait to read it. I want to see what there life was like and hear there stories out! I thought the film was amazing best film iv sin in a longgggg time!! i mean i after i watched it the first time i watched agen straight afta. i mean some of the things relate to our life in schools. How teachers do alwais want respect and they want us to give them respect first. Buh its like everyday they had to fight for there life and everyday there was a possibility they could die but they where brave. I think everyone can learn something goood from this!!!

I just got done watching the movie freedom writer’s and I already looked up the three books that were mention in the movie which was The Diary of Anne Frank, 12 Angry Men, and last but not least The Freedom Writers Diary. I must say that I loved this movie it made me realize that a change can happen all you have to do is strive for that change and it shall come. I have never witness someone getting shot nor someone dying in front of my face nor have I witness crips and bloods as far as me living in my community that I live. The funny part about this is I started college at a two year school and I have witness the two gangs and that’s sad. I live in a tough hood and I yet to see the beef between these two gangs and then as soon as I come to college this is my chance to see this. Me personality I think that it should be the other way around. Once again I must say that I loved this movie this was my first time seeing it and I cried as well too. I was really touched during this movie. I was touched more by me seeing that they was coming together and working as a team. That they put all their difference aside. They have inspired me a lot. I love to write poetry this movie has given my next poem to write. This movie is a true blessing for young kids as well as adults that have yet to make up there minds and realized that things should not be this way and that it is time to make a change not only for themselves but for the younger generation because they are the future and what they are taught is what they will do. As I seen in the movie a girl grew up with her father in a gang and she felt like she had to do the same. So let be smart on what we teach our kids. And if anything we should have the most impact on their lives not these streets that they call home.

Thank you freedom writers for opening my eyes.

Hi, my names is Marti, I’m Italian and I don’t speack english very well, but I want to tell you ”thancks”!
because, today I see your film in my class and I cry, you are now my heros, and I hope to bacame like you!not for your sad story but for your movement for your hope and for your light in your eyes, in your heart in your life.
thanxks because you give me a wounderful emotions!
I dream to speack with you and scuse me for my english!……..ahahah…….I love you!<3 marti

wow the movie was great i like it coz u may think it is real i think the movie is not yet in africa y dont u try to send to ur family, penpals, friends in africa?i have already sent ma penpal one.guyz just send it break the silence in the ghetto to the world.i love the gal in the movie who was aneta she is really talented when she was crying i cried too.

The movie reminded me of the essay by John Gatto, “The Seven Lesson School Teacher,’ as well as many other essays i have read in my english 101 class, i am only 16 and i have yet to be involed in any of the issues that these students were in yet i feel a connection to them. this movie not only showed the students side of the story but i also showed what some teachers go through whether it be divorce or what ever is around the corner, Being from a pretty decent neighbor hood i cant imagine a school really being as voilent or diffrent as it was there. In a way i wish i was there but at the same time i am glad i was only 2 when this tok place. what i ahve to say that Jakie forgets to menton in her blog above is the emotional dependecy these students felt towards Erin. That would have tied in nicely witht he battle scars bit. They say that empowerment through ecuation is a myth and it is when it comes to the social class these students were in. When it comes down too it money is the biggest issue throughout schools in general. It depends on what social class a student comes from to determind whether or not they deserve and education as so the system alos known as “school” says. but when this teacher did what she did with those students the myth faded and reality turned 180 degrees on them. whether or not this makes sense to anyone is beyond me, but at least i finally got this out of my system. lol

This movie did have a emotional inpacted on me i did really enjoyed watching it , actually in fact in the same night i watching twice. When i started watching it i felt nothing like empty inside.
But I stayed there watching the movie like i tryed to move but could bring myself to it, in a way this movie to me had a purpose. I don’t know what the purpose was until the end.

I’m 22 my parents both work when i was young didn’t really have a childhood, it was only me and my brother. My brother rase me, becasue my parents mostly work. This movie didn’t just show me about this differents about the people or there culture. It showed there was hope and faith.

This movie showed me how to looked fear in the eyes, it showed to let go with your emotional like i be honestly i did cry through this movie a lot and i’m grow male. It showed that no matter what the limtation are in life you have go with the good and the bad.

I’m Horned to those 150 people who took there time there life to share everything. $

Those 150 people are the real hero.

by all means,
a truley touching story

This movie is so moving and shows people go through in their everyday lives, and how one can change your perception on life. it showed that there is hope wherever you live, and to never give up no matter what anybody tells you.

Yea it sounds like a realy good book, ive only watched the movie so far but i realy want this book now :S ill get it soonish and give it a read for ya hehe thats for the heads up :) might send u a msg after i read it XD bye bye

i like the movie very much. i like the caracter in the movie, especially Erin Gruwell. i like the way she feced her students, her first group of high-risk teenagers. she is a good and courage teacher n i want to be like her. this movie makes me cry. i realy want this book coz i can keep it n i will read it when ever i want to. n im sure it will touch my friend’s heart when they read it.

I love the movie, because it’s about all of us and if we had more teachers like that the world would be a better place.
I do believe that a teachers job is to teach, and to do so the good teachers, gets into your head and help you with peosonal problems, so you can be thought, because a teachers job is more than just teaching!!!

ps: I saw the movie 3 times.

I absolute love this movie and would cry everytime i watch it…. the book is phenomenal! i didnt know that you could get those strong emotions through words…….. i mean, on the movie, they have all these super sad scenes and you cry becuse you see the look on their face and can feel all that pain. I feel the same way about the book and i can picturewhen the talk. I just cant wait till i see te movie again!!
xoxo this book!
