Actually the GeoBytes service provides data about the IP address you are coming in from. You can enter other IP addresses to get data about their locations as well.

I did a similar service as an experiment on my site. I think that location based indexing will be important in the near future and I wanted to play around. The GeoBytes stuff cost money or has links back to their site. I wanted something I could play with in PHP and that was free. http://www.sidebit.com/ProjectLocateIP.php The stuff I did is not a good as the GeoBytes stuff. Sometimes I don’t find the Lat/Lon and other times it’s in the wrong place. But it’s not bad considering that it’s free. Someday, given time, I want to do a page describing exactly how I did this and maybe even provide some of the code.
