Early in November the cost of getting caught sending unsolicited e-Mail in Ohio will become pricey…very pricey. Last month Ohio Governor Bob Taft signed into law Ohio’s first tough anti-spam legislation. The new law requires unsolicited commercial e-mail messages to contain the sender’s name, address, and e-mail address, along with opt-out instructions. It also requires senders to honor opt-out requests and makes it illegal to forge the sender’s address or other routing information in commercial e-mail messages. Penalties for spamming are stiff. Spam recipients can sue for $100 per e-Mail received, — up to $50,000 plus attorney’s fees, court costs, and other expenses.
