Fuel Cell for Notebooks

Materials and Energy Research Institute Tokyo has produced the smallest fuel cell for notebook computers. The tiny fuel cell weighs just 5 grams and the size is a diminutive 30×20x1 mm.

The fuel cells will be strung together and in the prototype notebook 50 were used to produce 25 watts of power. The fuel cells provide a typical notebook with power twice as long as conventional batteries. The fuel cell developed by the institute uses sodium borohydride as fuel and does not require a mechanism to extract hydrogen. The fuel cells do not contain any precious metals and can be produced cheaper than alternative fuel cell technologies.
