If you happen to have a yearning for a new download manager, then you may be interested in learning that there are some good options available for you. Take Downloader for X. It’s not going to win you millions of dollars, but it will do exactly what you’d expect from such an app.
The Internet connection I have here in Bangalore is slow by broadband standards, just 256 Kbps. This means long download times. Plus there is a very unreliable power supply. You never know when it will interrupt the download. So download managers are very much in need.
During the old dial up days I used the GetRight download manager. But these days almost every tool has an open source counterpart. So I googled and found Free Download Manager. It has all the features I used in GetRight and has a few more. Plus you can not beat the price. :-)
Since I am also trying out Ubuntu these days I looked for a Linux download manager. Downloader for X seems to be the popular choice But installing software on Ubuntu is a lot easier. The Synaptic Package Manager, I guess a GUI for apt-get, is amazing. I found and installed most of the software this way. Source: Vasanth Dharmaraj’s Blogs
