While my experience with Ubuntu is still pretty limited, I have continued to hear many great things about their GUI. As most of us know, the ‘root’ to gain a newbie’s confidence is by offering a friendly look and environment in which to work from.
Ubuntu is fast on its way to becoming a peoples OS. I have always wondered what is it that makes people embrace Ubuntu over other Linux distributions. After some pondering, it struck me that the USP (Unique Selling Point) of Ubuntu is its user friendliness. Ubuntu is a distribution targeted at the non-techie crowd - those that want to get their job done and not spend time tinkering with the OS. And consequently, the developers at Ubuntu have bundled simple easy to use GUI front end tools to achieve common system administration tasks. Ubuntu is excellent. I’ve been using it as a main OS since I discovered it in 2005. Whenever a Windows user tells me how difficult Linux is, I boot up my computer and show them that it’s much different than it was a few years ago. I think Gutsy will be another great improvement.

I think that the Linux Mint flavor of Ubuntu is a true beginner’s Linux.
I feel bothered that I need to download mplayer, java, flash in Ubuntu but not in Mint which still is Ubuntu anyway.
A beginner will be surprised that you need working DSL or faster to download all of that stuff.
Also, Mint won’t prompt you to immediately download “important security updates”.
