How Is Sony Still A Major Company?

I have been following a lot of the posts on Engadget and Gizmodo about Sony, specifically the Playstation 3. With each new post I read, I ask myself the question “how is Sony still a major company?”

I mean this seriously. Sony has done a lot of things over the last couple of months that you seriously wonder how they still compete in the electronic age that we all live in.

I always stay away from Sony products because they are more expensive then comparable products that are released by other companies. I have only owned 2 Sony products in my life time: (1) Playstation 1 and (2) a Sony DVD-ROM drive for my computer.

The PS1 was great at it’s inception because of the amount of data that could be stored on a disc/CD. That then continued to mold into a specific hybrid of DVD for PS2 and Blue-Ray (BD) for PS3. After 1 year, the DVD-ROM drive that I have only opens when I use a paperclip to force the drive open.

It seems that everything Sony has done since the whole 2005 Sony BMD CD copy protection scandal was been negative. First you have the cost of the PS3, then you have the superficial minor upgrades to the hard drive of the PS3, followed by the fact that only certain models of the PS3 will be able to natively play every PS1 and PS2 game (the rest are emulated if Sony deems them to be worthy).

Sony really needs to get their act in gear or they are going to continue to loss MAJOR major market share to the rest of the gaming and electronic world.

I think you have good points. Sony is losing a lot and I remember they posted losses for the first time last year(maybe 2005) of $100million.

But you have to remember what does sony do.

Yes they make ps3 and various computer electronics devices. But where they make their money is..

Sony Pictures/Flim/Movies
Sony Music
Sony Bravia/Wega Tv’s/Cameras/Video cameras
Sony Viao Laptops/Pcs
Sony Erickson mobiles

Thats a lot of areas you havnt mentioned and thats what keeps sony such a major company. So what if their ps3 and dvd rom departments cant do anything or make any money. Does sony care? So long as they keep selling games and get a nice cut on licencing each game for the ps2/ps3?

As for the gaming world yes they have lost crediability as the ps3 fails to sell here in Ireland as well. But for the electronics world as a whole, I dont think so. A new sony store must be opening up every 6 months here so they must be doing something right.

You must be very young.

Sony could lose the PS1/2/3 market and not really care much. It may be a matter of pride, but that is about it.

Do any of these sound familiar? Sony Trinitron televisions? Sony audio equipment, most notably Sony ES, and the co-developer of the CD and DVD formats.

For many there is no better television than Sony, for many who are into mid-fi audio, Sony is IT. Most of the best Sony audio gear never gets to the US.

Walkman?

Are any of these things ringing a bell?

Just another small thing…do a Google lookup for Sony Esprit audio, and prepare to be amazed [if you love technology and audio even a little bit]

You are either naive, ignorant or stupid. If you’re going to blog about something, then do some research. You’re hardly an expert because you’ve owned two products.

This article really isn’t worth commenting on, but firstly, you’ve answered your own question: “I have only owned 2 Sony products in my life time.” Think of all the other consumer electronics companies around today whose products you haven’t bought.

Secondly, Sony’s more than just a consumer electronics company. The CCD in your non-Sony digital camera, the LCD screen on your non-Sony laptop (not to mention the music you may be listening to right now), could have all been produced by a Sony company. The full list of subsidiaries is here, for your reference: http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/CorporateInfo/Subsidiaries/index.html

Don’t quit your day job.

Chris, you idiot! LOL
