Drinking Diet Soda May Reduce The Risk Of Forming Kidney Stones
New research from the University of California, San Francisco suggests that the citrate and malate content in commonly consumed sodas may be sufficient to inhibit the development of calcium stones. The study was presented at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA).
Increased alkalinity is proven to augment citraturia, a known factor for calcium stones. Malate increases the amount of alkali delivered. Researchers measured the citrate and malate content of 15 popular diet sodas. The researchers found that Diet Sunkist Orange contained the greatest amount of total alkali and Diet 7-Up had the greatest amount of citrate as alkali.
“This study by no means suggests that patients with recurrent kidney stones should trade in their water bottles for soda cans,” said Anthony Y. Smith, MD, an AUA spokesman. “However, this study suggests instead that patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption.”

In South Africa we can easily obtain a non-alchoholic grape juice made from a variety called Hanepoot, a whitish grape. I have found this to be very effective in reducing the size and eventually flushing kidney stones when consumed by the litre or two. Probably sorts outs that alkalinity, but the clever ones will know better – I just know it works.

This is a bit of a misnomer. While these drinks may reduce the “chance” of getting kidney stones, the aspartame alone should cause anyone to stay away from diet drinks. I won’t try to convince you. I’ll let you convince yourself. Go to http://www.dorway.com or http://www.dorway.org . There is a wealth of information proving Aspartame should never have become a food additive.

Diet sodas are laden with Aspartame a known chemical that impacts the central nervous system and Canadian Air Force Pilots are not allowed to drink this stuff. Sodas have phosphates which is an acid that eats away metal and your body. You want to follow Kalifornication lead go ahead your one less in the food chain……I’ll educated myself and stay away from sodas…there are other alternative methods for making sure you body pH is in the Alkaline range thru fruits and vegetables……if you want to justify sodas…..go ahead…
