iPod Classic

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to review Apple’s 3rd generation iPod nano, and needless to say, we came away impressed with the latest carnation of the iPod family. Apple is too good at what it does, and it shows. Today, we have the iPod Classic in our lab, and unfortunately, we don’t know what to write about. Yes, it’s a rarity with us, considering how we love to publish our opinions, but there’s nothing differentiating between the 3rd generation iPod nano and iPod Classic. Other than the larger display, higher storage capacity, and an overall increase in size, both devices are identical to one another. Of course, that’s a good thing, for the most part.

We absolutely adore the display, even though it features the same 320×280 resolution despite a 0.5-inch increase in display size from the initial 2.0-inch on the new iPod nano. While we enjoyed our viewing experience with the nano, we didn’t recommend anyone replacing their dedicated video player for health reasons. Thankfully, the 2.5-inch display takes care of that, and it’s far more comfortable for videos.

The battery life is expected to last 30 hours for audio and five hours for video for the 80GB version (the one we are evaluating today), and 40 hours of audio and seven hours of video for the 160GB version, according to Apple. While we would’ve appreciated it a longer view time for video, audio life is out of the ballpark. There aren’t too many music players with 30 or 40 hours of battery life for pure audio. We were easily able to score Apple’s recommended battery life with a few minutes here and there on a single recharge. Good going, Apple!

Our verdict stays the same for iPod Classic as well. For $249.99 for the 80GB version, it’s the music player to get if you are looking for an all-in-one device with a large capacity.
