Most of us knew about the fact that Cisco had the name iPhone trademarked, but stories yesterday indicated that Cisco was awaiting paperwork from Apple, which I took to indicate they were close to a deal on the name. Apparently not.
Cisco Systems Inc. said Wednesday it is suing Apple Inc. in federal court over Apple’s use of Cisco’s registered iPhone trademark for its new handheld device. Cisco has owned the trademark on the name “iPhone” since 2000, when it acquired InfoGear Technology Corp., which originally registered the name. [Source: MSNBC]
We Say: Well, that didn’t take long, did it? The first lawsuit over the iPhone. Of course, it does not ship until June, so there’s plenty of time to work out a deal.
