Starting today, online fans have the opportunity to give one aspiring yarn spinner a shot at storytelling stardom.
As part of the “What’s Your Story?” contest sponsored by The Moth and TNT on MySpace, the public is being invited to view the videos submitted by the three storytelling finalists and vote for their favorite before December 1st. To enter the contest, storytellers had to submit a four-minute video on the theme of being “out on a limb.” The winner will be announced December 4th.
Hailed as “New York’s hottest and hippest literary ticket” by The Wall Street Journal, The Moth is an acclaimed non-profit organization dedicated to the art of storytelling. Since its inception in 1997, over 60,000 people have listened to more than 2,000 stories told by people from all walks of life - from Rosie O’Donnell, Ethan Hawke, and Julia Stiles to a fire fighter and a hot dog eating champion. All of its 265 original storytelling events have sold out in 48 hours or less.
The finalists, chosen by a panel of luminaries including actress Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under), musician Kimya Dawson (The Moldy Peaches), and humorist Andy Borowitz (The Borowitz Report), are competing for the chance to win both a trip to New York City to attend a Moth StorySLAM in early 2007 and additionally a trip to Los Angeles to participate in The Moth’s first-ever bi-coastal StorySLAM in August 2007.
The winning video will also be prominently featured on the MySpace homepage and showcased in its Viral Video section.
The finalists vying for top bragging rights are:
Kelley: A 25-year-old filmmaker from Austin, Texas, whose story unfolds after he responds to an online job posting for an “international vegetable courier.”
Adam: This Hoboken, NJ freelance writer tells the tale of his morning commute crush and how they shared an admiration for a professional female billiard player nicknamed ‘The Irish Invader.’
James: A New York native, he shares a hilarious story of a dinner party discussion that turned sour when the topic turned to placentas.
