AMD - No More Shaky Ground

AMD has removed some anxiety for me, for which I’m grateful. I’ve been wishing I had just a few more solid details about its upcoming major hardware changes. Maybe it was a crystal ball reader that made it clear it up for me.
In any case, here is the very official word on the new CPU socket name and the lines of CPUs to fill it:
Ensure you are getting ready for the exciting infrastructure transition to the new Socket AM2 desktop processors in Q2. AMD will launch a wide variety of Socket AM2 products for the AMD Athlon 64 FX, AMD Athlon 64 X2, AMD Athlon 64, and AMD Sempron processor brands. AMD expects infrastructure support from many motherboard partners servicing the performance, mainstream and value segments. Be sure you are planning your product offerings based on this new technology. Performance segments will likely target toward DDR2-800 memory, while the mainstream market is likely to target DDR2-667 memory.
As you can see, previous reports that the new socket would be named Socket F were totally wrong. And to complete the news update, AMD sent along a complete list of the CPUs covered by the new socket. Also confirmed is the ability to work with DDR2 memory. That was well-reported, but then so was the name of the new socket. Ah, well, this is certainly official enough now!
Here’s hoping that this will make your summer shopping list a little easier to fill in!
