Google-Storm?

Google. A single name that has come to mean so very much more than a company. With hurricanes so much in the news in past weeks, we can all understand this comparison - you can liken Google to the digital equivalent of a hurricane. It continues along a mysterious path from nothing to a monster that sucks up everything in its path and leaves nothing it’s passed untouched.

Now there’s news that Google might be eyeing AOL as a possible acquisition target. While I had heard that Microsoft was thinking of grabbing some of AOL, I had no idea it was in that bad a shape. In any case, such a move would bring Google into focus as perhaps the top Internet company in the world. It would also provide an instant outlet for its own technology - an instant subscriber base that can be used as a target for the Google understated advertising, and something that I haven’t seen mentioned: instant access to the Netscape/Mozilla browser.

Since Google has been soaking up browser experts for some time, this might just be the first move of a digital Blitzkreig designed to sink Microsoft and its Internet Explorer. No doubt Microsoft would have something to say about this whole matter, but it’s proven to be particularly ineffective against the Googlecane so far. Time will tell…
