Here’s a crash course in magazine publishing. A magazine makes money basically two ways: you sell it on newsstands and via subscriptions, or you give it away. Giving magazines away is called “Controlled Circ.” meaning the publisher promises the advertiser that Brain Surgeon Monthly will only go to actual brain surgeons, and therefore, the magazine can charge very high advertising rates. To succeed in controlled circ publishing, you have to find the brain surgeons, and that’s where we come in.
