Google ordered to settle GEICO AdWords suit

So, it looks like there may finally be some peace between GEICO and Google regarding this crazy Adwords fiasco. While this whole thing apparently involves some confusion about use of Trademarks with the Adwords program, I guess we can always leave it to the courts to settle this once and for all.

It all started back in April 2004. Before then, companies could request that Google not sell their trademarks to competitors using the AdWords marketing service. In May of that year, Google changed the policy to allow anyone to include trademarks in their AdWords, provided the trademarks didn’t appear in the text of the ad. The policy change sparked a flood of legal action, and GEICO filed suit against Google and Yahoo’s Overture, claiming that the sale of its registered trademarks as sponsored search terms was illegal.
