E-Mail:

Adelphia Stands In For Big Brother

The question here is: Does your ISP have the right to filter your e-mail without even letting you know it’s happening? I’ve just found out that Adelphia is filtering every customer e-mail using Brightmail. Nothing about this has ever been circulated by Adelphia nor have they ever asked permission to do so =>

Although no spam solution is 100% effective, our Brightmail solution delivers solid results. It currently filters over 43% of all emails that are delivered to Adelphia.net email addresses

In fact, if it had not been for an article in the current issue of their newsletter, I would never have found out why so many of my e-mails have failed to appear as expected.

While some people might welcome help in the eternal war over spam, there’s one point that you might have overlooked in this case – you have NO CONTROL over this filter, what it filters out, or what is done with the e-mail in question. That’s right, you don’t get to see it. Period. It doesn’t go into some bulk mail folder. It goes directly into that Great Black Hole, along with single socks and the car keys.

So, I let them know that I was ‘displeased’ and that I would be discontinuing use of their e-mail service IMMEDIATELY. Then I let them know that our little chat would show up in print, here. Presumably, they care about as much as they do about their customers’ e-mails (or rights). If you’re an Adelphia customer, I urge you to let them know that you, too, don’t appreciate losing 43% of your e-mail without even seeing it.

Personally, I’m also heading out to the EFF site to get them involved. This behavior is just south of criminal, in my eyes. It’s bad enough having the government spying on everything we do!

What Do You Think?
