Is AMD playing to the media with the Intel antitrust suit?

Hate it or love it, you have to admit that it works. As sleazy at it is perceived by some, making wild appeals to the media works more often than not.

Nothing grabs attention like an underdog taking on an industry titan, so when AMD filed a massive antitrust suit against Intel late last month, and Intel offices in Europe were subsequently raided, folks in the industry started taking notice. Heavyweight research and market analysis firm Gartner has weighed in on the dust-up with an eye towards calming the jittery nerves of… I don’t know, IT purchasing managers?

In its analysis, Gartner says that while the lawsuit is sure to grab its share of the headlines, neither AMD’s nor Intel’s operations should be affected by it. Given that lack of disturbance, corporate procurement plans remain unchanged for the time being, if not for the duration of the fight.

What’s particularly interesting is the research company’s portrayal of AMD’s lawsuit. Gartner says that while AMD may have grounds to fight Intel on antitrust issues, it smells suspiciously like part of a PR campaign. [Read the rest]
