E-Mail:

Black Thursday

Is this a cursed day or something? I no sooner get through with Microsoft Gator than I see this item “AIM Adds Plaxo”.

Now I know that Plaxo isn’t a spyware or adware vendor (as far as I know), but their habit of spamming their victims (otherwise known as ‘users’) doesn’t put them on MY short list. Maybe you’ve seen one of their ‘hooks’ in the water - an e-mail shows up one day from someone you know. You open it up and find that it’s a canned ‘request’ from that person to fill in your personal info, so that Plaxo will have you on file if this sender ever wants to get in touch with you. It’s a lot like Outlook Contacts, but instead of being safely on your system, it’s in the hands of a third party with their own agenda. At the bottom will be a barefaced attempt to get you to sign up with Plaxo, so that YOU can annoy the c**p out of people, too.

I’ve heard that in the past, at least, actually signing up will result in such a flood of spam that if someone on your list DID try to contact you, you’d have to dig their mail out a stack an hour long. Perhaps in the ensuing time, they’ve learned how NOT to annoy people, but am I ready to assume that such is the case?

Not THIS Thursday!
