Epson Buys Market Share

This goes into te ‘If you can’t beat ‘em…’ column. Seiko Epson, unable to get anywhere in court, has ’settled’ the issue by paying Multi-Union Trading to keep their Epson-compatible ink cartridges out of the U.S. market. Multi-Union’s cartridges had been sold here under the PrintRite brand name.

It’s kind of sad that a large company such as Seiko-Epson has robbed the U.S. consumers of personal choice in buying ink, but I guess that’s how things work in eastern Asia.

The Japanese printer maker reached a settlement with Multi-Union Trading that will see 75 of Multi-Union’s cartridge models barred from being imported and sold in the U.S., Epson says. Hong Kong-based Multi-Union sells its products in the U.S. under the PrintRite brand. The settlement also includes a financial agreement, terms of which were not disclosed.
