Sometimes, Canada really rocks! I believe this instance to be just such an example of their overall foresight and wisdom. According to Ars, Canada is opting for their own copyright reform. But there is to be punishment only when a law is being violated, not just for have the potential ability for such an act such as in the States.
One of the nastier American exports these days is the DMCA, which should you need a refresher, is one of the worst pieces of legislation passed in recent times. From being used to justify illegal subpoenas, to making reverse engineering easily preventable, to shutting down toner cartridge competition, to killing off Fair Use, the law is a major blow to consumer interests. And, it looks like it won’t be heading to Canada anytime soon, at least in its bone-crushing form.
Industry Canada and Canadian Heritage have revealed their plans for copyright reform. The big development is that while Canada will be adopting anti-circumvention statutes, they do the United States one better by making circumvention illegal only in cases where someone is actually infringing on copyright.
