Phishing fraudsters, aware that people are catching on to their scams, have taken another tack: using trojan horse programs to steal your bank account information. So far, the scams have been targeting banks in Brazil and Great Britain, but experts fear they will soon show up in the U.S.
The trojan arrives in a phishing email and installs itself onto your system. It then runs quietly in the background, waiting for you to enter your bank’s web site address in your browser. When you do, the trojan begins to capture every keystroke, sending your account information to the crooks.
To protect yourself, turn off the preview pane in your email client and make sure your antivirus program is up to date.
