Jupiter’s Shiny Event

Are you tired of the election yet? Is your very fiber sick of the people ranting and raving about our president? Exhausted with the bloggers analysis that just won’t stop? I thought so; this one is for you who, like me, will want to address the potential issues of political hacktivists and ubiquitous political spammers on Monday.

Whilst the mourning and rejoicing of the 4th was raging, the Hubble team was showing images of Jupiter having a little event that took place on March 28, 2004. 5 spots appeared in rapid fire photos taken on the upper half of the planet and the Hubble team are claiming they are a rare 3 way eclipse of three of Jupiter’s moons; Io, Ganymeade and Callisto. This event happens once in a decade due to the different orbital rates of the moons. The rock candy color of the planet in the photos is owed to the imaging technology, which uses near infrared to reflect information about its gaseous atmosphere. The Hubble site offers a few minutes of astronomical education with little diagrams showing the three moons and their shadows, annotated photos identifying the shadows and some nice wallpaper.

Forget about Bush, go look at Jupiter
