When you try to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to update the Microsoft Windows operating system from the Windows Update Web site, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.
Error 0×80072F78
You receive the error message while the following site is loading:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
CAUSE
This error may occur if your computer cannot connect to a component of the Windows Update Web site.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are listed:
Method 1 - Verify the Hosts file
Method 2 - Check the firewall software, the antivirus software, and other software
Method 3 - Add the Windows Update Web sites to the list of trusted sites
Method 4 - Add the Windows Update Web sites to the list of exceptions”

i have dislabled my fire wall, then added the windows download sites to my trusted sites, still i m getting the messege (i get this error messege 0*80072f78 while windows check for avilable updte) while go for update.

firewall software is disabled so nothing to worry abt it and as far i know symantec antivirus doesnt protect windows update because i did update with symantec enabled before.
i have added windows update sites in my trusted sites.
as far as firewall is disabled, i dont think that any thing requires to be added in exceptions.
still i have the problem error: 0*80072f78
i m accessing internet through proxy and running under domain. i can update windows 2000 professional but only problem happens with windows xp.
ny suggestion?

Cannot it be linked with something like this: maybe there’s similar service for XP like on WM5 device
