Microsoft appears to have removed the fix described in KB article 329256 from the Download Center and the Windows Update web sites.
“SYMPTOMS
After you install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1(SP1)-based computer, you may experience decreased performance of both reading and writing, from or to a 1394 hard disk drive:
329256 FIX: Inconsistent gap count can cause 1394 devices to not enumerate
The performance of your 1394 hard disk drive may vary, depending on your 1394 devices and your Microsoft Windows environment.
CAUSE
The problem occurs because of an increase in the gap count for stable enumeration. This lowers the 1394 BUS utilization and affects the 1394 hard disk drive performance.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the ‘Applies to’ section of this article.”
