Just what is “free software”?

  • No Related Post

It has recently come to the attention of PDA Avenue that the software publishing company 9.95 Soft is redistributing freely available Palm OS applications, licensed under the GNU GPL (General Public License), for $9.95. For example, 9.95 Clock is simply a redistribution of the freely available BigClock originally developed and distributed by Jens Rupp for no cost under the GPL. Because 9.95 Clock is also distributed under the GPL, and includes all of the source code and copyright notices that were included with BigClock, they are completely within compliance of the GPL. There is nothing in the GPL that prevents a software publisher like 9.95 Soft from taking open source code published under the GPL and selling it under the GPL, even completely unmodified.
