Free Video Editing Software?

I have a friend on a budget who needs some video editing software. Since that isn’t my thing, I don’t know what to make of an offer for free downloadable video editing software. Is it laden with spyware? Is it worth the time to download? For free, I don’t expect it to be Adobe Premiere. I just hoping it is better than something like MovieStar 5, which just doesn’t seem to work right.
