Tom’s Hardware has an eminently readable article describing the uses and pitfalls of gigabit ethernet. This is one of the few things I have seen in recent times that actually may provide a reason to upgrade a system (at gigabit levels just receiving all that data can require a fair amount of CPU cycles). However, he does point out that this won’t be a serious consideration for several years.
