Followup to RIAA Settlement Case

  • No Related Post

Forgive me, I didn’t directly link the to this site in headline because it isn’t entirely family friendly and I didn’t want any to click through before knowing that (site link here). In an on going discussion of the proposed RIAA settlement, several people noted that an SSN was required to sign up to a check. Naturally more than one person was suspicious and one actually checked the whois record for site. They found the business it was registered to and called to ask. They said that the partial SSN (they only ask for the last four digits) was to make sure that each person was uniquely identified; i.e., even if they had the same name their SSN’s would differ. In my original story I questioned the veracity of the RIAA settlement site, but after reading about all over the web and even hearing about it on NPR I think it is safe to say it is legitimate. I still don’t know their privacy policy and if I were to give them my personal information, I would certainly check it out first. BTW, I am thinking of doing so since both my wife and I have bought music during the ‘95-’00 period covered in the settlement.
