In an unexpected move, Hewlett Packard announced Monday that Michael Capellas, former Chairman/CEO of Compaq Computer Corporation, and President of HP, would be leaving the company to “pursue other career opportunities.” “Michael made a commitment to see the merger through, and now thanks to the hard work of the entire team, we are meeting or exceeding all of our integration targets,” said HP’s Chairman and CEO, Carly Fiorina. A source familiar with the situation stated that Capellas “wasn’t happy with his role at HP. He didn’t think he was being utilized.” In addition, Fiorina announced that HP wouldn’t be hiring another President; the executives that formerly reported to Capellas would report directly to Fiorina. Capellas had had “late-stage” talks with WorldCom to take over as CEO-potentially competing with XO Communications CEO Dan Akerson, BellSouth Vice Chairman Gary Forsee, and a fourth, unidentified candidate.
