New fuel cells may make rechargeable batteries obsolete

How many devices do you use on a daily basis that run on batteries? Chances are it’s quite a few. Chances are that purchasing batteries or even recharging batteries for these ‘toys’ is probably not very high on your list of “stuff I like doing.” The answer may be portable fuel cells which are about the size and weight of a deck of cards.
Running on methane the only byproducts of the reaction that produces electricity is a tiny bit of carbon dioxide and water. Don’t hold your breath for these new “batteries” though. They are expected to reach mass production in 2010, but they’ll provide more power and should last ten times longer than a high performance battery.
