Ping is a term that’s thrown around all over the place. That being said, the root of what a ping actually is remains the same throughout most of them. In basic terms, it is a utility used to test the reliability of a connection between two points on the Web. Ping is often used during gaming, Internet, and local network troubleshooting, and various other connection tests to determine the root of a problem. There are several applications in which we use ping today. Here are some of them.
Internet Connectivity
Windows, OS X, and Linux users all have access to a very easy and simple method of testing an Internet connection. By opening Terminal (Command Line or “CMD” on Windows), you can simply type ping www.google.com to test your ability to reach Google. This can be a helpful way of determining whether or not a problem pulling up Google (or any other page) is caused by a general lack of ability to connect to the Web, or something more localized to the browser you’re using. If you receive all of your packets back, but the delay time is considerably high (1,000 or more milliseconds), you may be experiencing problems between your local network and the site’s server. The best way to test this is by sending a ping to another site that you know isn’t hosted by the same company.
Network Troubleshooting
You can also ping an IP address to test your connection with a specific computer or device. By sending a ping request to 127.0.0.1, you are able to test whether or not your computer’s networking hardware and software is functioning properly. This is typically one of the first steps taken during Internet and local network connection troubleshooting. If you don’t receive any packets, or only some of the packets, sent using the ping command to that address, you may have something wrong with your networking hardware, drivers, or some other software configuration. If you receive the ping back from your networking equipment’s loopback, you can also send ping commands to the other computers in your network directly to their IP address, which will usually start with 192.168.
Gaming
If you play online games, you’ve probably noticed a ping reading on you and the folks you are playing with. This reading lets you know how long it takes each person’s commands to be sent to the server and received back at home. In short, the larger your ping, the more lag you’ll notice during gameplay. Some servers (especially on FPS games) will enact a policy that automatically kicks you out if your ping exceeds acceptable limits. Ideally, you want your ping to be less than 100 milliseconds.
By using this simple tool, you can better understand and resolve a large variety of different connectivity issues that may occur. You can even avoid potentially unpleasant experience in otherwise fun games.

@twitter-46976601:disqus I can confirm you do NOT need a UDID.
It downloaded as dmg what do I do now
Double click the dmb and it will extract the .ipsw file. Then follow the rest of the steps. Make sure you are using iTunes beta 9.
how do i do this on windows 7? i tried winimage to extract the file and got an error reading file
If we’re supposed to use beta 9, why does the article link to beta 7?
Do we have a link to beta 9?
It works. IOS 5 on my iphone 4 now. No need to register the UDID. Download winimage to extract the ipsw file from the dmg file and restore.
Have any one of you tested with gevey sim card ? THX
Yes, and they do NOT work. They haven’t since iOS 5 beta 2.
That’s not true, they were working on beta 7. I’m not sure if it was the regular Gevey or the Turbo or the Ultra, but on beta 7 at least one type of Gevey WAS working.
Whether or not it works on this release of iOS5 though is not something I’m aware of yet.
Works on windows beta 7 too… Tested personally
has anyone tried it on an iPod touch 4th gen? I don’t want to risk it…
it’s fine
i have and works good dude
Works great
this does not work for my 3Gs
Did not work on my 3GS either =(
Seems the CDMA version is not for Verizon Wireless. No IPSW file after extraction. Four files, but no IPSW.
Did you extract 2 after the first extrctions?
C’mon Pirillo, are you insane? This GM is meant to developers. This is confidential information. You are violating the NDA and doing piracy.
Apple will fall on your head soon.
It sucks, because this will be the first time anyone will have ever violated NDA and pirated anything, especially iPhone iOS GMs.
worked perfectly on my ipod touch 4g
pprove
Anyone tried it for the ipad?
I’m getting error 21 too. OSX Lion. I’ve rebooted, re-downloaded the dmg, everything.
Make sure you guys are installing the latest Beta of the new iTunes before doing the rest. It won’t work with older versions.
Oh, and I’m trying it for the iPad 2. Error 21.
This worked for me on both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 1, just followed the instructions.
yes, I think so, I tried without updating my iTunes and it didn’t work but did after.
Did you keep getting the Error 21 before updating? That’s the one that I got. I am d’ling the iTunes 10.5 beta 9 now and will see….
did it work?
yea worked great, I didn’t get any errors once I updated iTunes.
I’ve seen that error a few times in the past. If you’ve used TinyUmbrella, you should make sure that you’ve unchecked that setting for “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit” under the Advanced tab.
I’ve been using iOS 5 since the beta’s were released, but I’m still excited about the official release. Having a few problems but I’m sure they will be sorted in time!
Does not work for me. Every time I try to load ios5 i get a error and have to restore back to ios4. am i missing a key step that is not in the walk through?
The iPad files you’ve linked to above, are the WiFi + 3G ones for iPad 1 or 2? If they’re 2, where can the iPad 1 3G GSM files be downloaded from?
Discovered a pretty major bug. I have a passcode on. When you double tap the home button when the phone is locked, go to camera, then gallery, then press the home button. You are in the phone. Passcode averted.
Actually, the phone goes back to the lockscreen.
I had the same result as Cyrus. Are you sure your phone had gone into locked mode … check the Auto-Lock durations.
Try and recreate again:
a) Ensure the phone is passcode locked:
i) slide to unlock
ii) when you get to the passcode screen, hit cancel to go back. (If you aren’t prompted to enter your lock code, wait for longer than your Auto-Lock duration, then start back at (a).)
b) double-tap the home button.
c) go into the gallery. At this point you should not be able to see any photos (other than the ones you’ve taken in this session) because the phone is locked.
d) tap the home button. It should take you back to the passcode screen.
I just tested it out on mine with a passcode and it and it only shows a gallery of the pics I took while my phone was locked. You are not “in the phone”. In fact, when I tried to get into the gallery before I took a pic, it asked for my passcode.
Any way to reverse this upgrade? My phone can’t connect to itunes at all anymore… I got ios5 up and running but I just get errors from itunes… and my messages + pictures got lost ???
use 7zip to extract the files
Is anyone else having a problem installing itunes 10 beta 7? it says i have insufficient privileges with common/apple/ files… anyway to stop this?
It still has some bugs
only small things I see: The camera icon is not located next to the slide to unlock… and tasks do not have location setting options… maybe I am missing it – anyone else see this?
you have to double click the home button
I have an iphone 4 GSM, most up to date itunes version, tried to upload iOS5 and gave me an error and had to restore to 4.3.5….any ideas?
what was the error number? also, when you say, “most up to date iTunes version” do you mean 10.4 or 10.5? You need 10.5 beta.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ITUNES BETA 7, OTHER WISE IT WILL NOT WORK AND YOU WILL RESTORE YOUR iPOD/iPHONE FOR NOTHING.
(All caps because quite frankly, you wouldn’t have read it without it)
Thanks a ton!
Works incredible!!! Great Upload!!!
how do extract the ipsw file on a Mac? please help!
you don’t extract the ipsw file. that’s exactly the one you need to browse and select from itunes when you go to perform the upgrade.
The iTunes 10 beta download is corrupt when I try to unzip

It’s a .dmg file and it doesn’t come up on iTunes when I try to restore it with iOS 5?
This isn’t working for me either. have latest beta of each as provided in this article, and my iTunes is giving an error, saying i am not eligible for this build (during initial verifications stage). Tried using tiny umbrella to redirect hosts, but just gives me error 11.
Well, guess i’ll have to wait.
I got it working! you have to convert the .dmg file to an IPSW with a program such as PowerISO
Has anyone tried on Verizon iPhone 4?
I can confirm that the CDMA version works perfect. I just restored it onto my iPhone without issue.
I have an IPad 2 Wifi – 3G which software should i use?
Reply Please.
WARNING!!
If you are using Windows 7 64bits, installing iTunes 10.5 beta 7 for Win7x64 will kill your iTunes.
DONT DO IT!!
What do you mean “kill” your iTunes? What error messages are you getting? It worked just fine for me.
where do i get the itunes beta from ?
works perfectly on iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G CDMA
I can’t get itunes beta to install
Is there a place to download iCloud Control Panel for Windows? Thx in advance.
I get error 3002 every time. Installed Itunes beta. Tried by extracting the IPSW from the DMG and by downloading the IPSW directly
Yep me too. If you figure it out, let me know too please.
It worked like a charm. Thanks!
Worked great on my iTouch 4th gen.
found it.
sorry if this is a dumb question but how do i tell if my phone is gsm or cdma?
AT&T = GSM
Verizon = CDMA
*cough* umm, works….. IT WORKS!!! Trololololololololo (>’0′)>
I can also confirm that the iOS5 CDMA is working with an iPhone4 CDMA. Although, I’m not that impressed so far…
trying to update iP4, using iTunes 10.5b7 on Lion, says device not eligible. Have tried with and without cydia gs.apple.com in /etc/hosts, no f**king difference.
iTunes just stop working, it didnt start up at all and thats it.
I had to restore Windows to a previous checkpoint and then repair iTunes with the actual version setup file. I have Win 7 Ultimate 64x. I didnt uninstall iTunes prior the beta7 installation so maybe that was the problem, I just installed it on top of the actual version… but this is a known issue at the Apple forums.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3106570?start=0&tstart=0
I think I’ll just wait for the offical release
Sorry for the bad english.
Use the “restore” button instead of the “update” button. Go back and re-read the instructions to see if there’s anything else you missed too.
I was wondering if anyone has a video going through the process, and has anyone tried on a iPhone 3GS running 4.3.5 and do i need the 7Zip if im running windows?
I have followed all instructions on this page, as well as many suggestions in the bottom, but I keep on getting error 21. Using iTunes 10.5 beta 9 on Mac OS X Lion. I even downloaded the .ipsw file twice because I thought the file was corrupt the first time. Didn’t really help.
Don’t see the speech to text microphone on keyboard on iPhone 4 CDMA. Also, no Friend Finder app? Is this not quite final version?
I’m using Windows 7 64 bit. Itunes beta installs but won’t run. I’ve uninstalled all Apple apps, rebooted ans tried again, but it doesn’t work. Any ideas?
I don’t see a download for Apple TV 2 – is it out there?
Works perfectly! Can’t wait for the ipad 2 + IOS 5 Jailbreak!
i tried to do it on my ipod 3rd generation and a error came up (21) think that error is the security thingy thing so if any body can guide me through let me know. By the way im using a mac
just did on a Verizon iPhone 4, iPad 1 w/ Wi-Fi & GSM & iPod Touch. all worked perfect every time. Am using iTunes 10.5 b132 on a MBP w/ Lion
I keep getting error code 21!!! Wtf
I’ve never had luck with these type of things, although i feel i’m computer literate. This actually works though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What DMG file are you people talkign about? I downloaded the iPhone 4 iOS5 ipsw file directly..am i not supposed to use this?
What DMG file are you people talkign about? I downloaded the iPhone 4 iOS5 ipsw file directly..am i not supposed to use this?
Well, I have a version of iTunes 10.5 and managed to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 GSM. However it wouldn’t restore my data at all, am now attempting to restore back to an old version in recovery mode – fingers crossed I haven’t lost EVERYTHING.
It dint work for me my phone is fucked now
I’d like to know this too. Amy downside to doing this early?
I have done everything correctly. But when i get to the point where i need to restore, I go to choose the file, and it is greyed out. it won’t let me select it. Why???
I downloaded new iTunes and iPhone 4 with AT&T. I can’t seem to get the restore to bring up the software. Any suggestions?
Just waiting for my restore but it looks to have worked – thanks to itsjakez and renato for the pointers
I have all my apps but no contacts, how can i get them back?
Worked great for my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 wifi
Awesome! This worked for my iPhone 3GS with a flawless install.
I can’t mirroring to work on my iPad 2
What about apple tv?
will I loose all my apps?
If I updated this way will it affect the official update
Fletchy could pls help out
Wrong
It is working !
and im not a developer, did it from a windows xp machine.
have you got it figured out yet?
I got the same error until I installed the iTunes beta…make sure you do that.
Use Transmac
He might not have, but that sure helped me out. First time dipping my toes into the beta arena and I just freaked out I had bricked my iPad. Your trick solved my problem. I will now patiently wait for the 12th like a good boy.
How do you get itunes beta?
are you using windows?
Fuck that’s a stupid mistake. Thanks dude.
yes it is. it was proven legal in court.
This also happens to me. I was quite surprised that nothing is happening… I’ll try a rollback to the stable version of iTunes and guess to wait that 4 days to the Release.
