P2P applications have always been a gray area of the law. Some get smacked down and bought out (Napster) while others try and remain below the radar. One such application, Morpheus, was recently green-lighted by US courts.
The ruling, that Morpheus’s application does not break copyright laws because it is capable of “substantial non-infringing uses”.
The court’s decision states that: “The introduction of new technology is always disruptive to old markets, and particularly to those copyright owners whose works are sold through well established distribution mechanisms.”
