Linux Launches Mobile Coup

The open source movement has never been in such a strong position. Thanks the new found friend in the mobile world, the mobile OS is now in a stronger position than ever before.

The open-source movement has found a new battleground: the tiny operating systems inside mobile phones. And unlike its tough early wars with the PC establishment, the movement has high-level support. Motorola, the second-largest mobile phone handset maker in the world, has already shipped 4 million Linux cell phones, primarily in . Motorola is so convinced that Linux has a future powering cell phones that the Schaumberg, Illinois-based company is leading a coalition to build a formal Mobile Linux software product.
Motorola’s move has all the earmarks of a coup against the top handset company, Nokia, which has close ties with mobile operating software company Symbian. The coalition announced in June includes NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, and Vodafone in addition to Motorola. That’s a powerful enough group to threaten not only Nokia, but also Symbian and Microsoft, the companies that have led the market for smart phone software almost from its inception….
