This just in - mobile gaming still bites! And from the looks of things, it’s not going to be changing from this trend anytime soon.
Ask average cell phone users if they play games on their mobiles, and chances are the answer will be “no.” While people increasingly use their cells for more than calls—taking snaps on camera phones being an example—most users don’t think of gaming.
According to mobile research firm M:Metrics, while less than 5 percent of mobile users in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States currently download games for their phones each month, more than 20 percent have played a mobile game. To put that in perspective, 70 percent of users in those countries send text messages each month (the figure is 36 percent in the U.S.)
But mobile game companies are not deterred—as Electronic Arts demonstrated when it paid a whopping $680 million for mobile game specialist Jamdat last fall.
Glu Mobile is equally bullish. Since forming in 2001, the company has collected $58 million from BA Venture Partners, Globespan Capital Partners, Granite Global Ventures, NEA, Sienna Venture, and Time Warner Investments. And did they ever back a winner: Glu games are now offered in nearly 70 countries by more than 110 carriers on 700 different handset models…. Source: Red Herring
