Mobile king holds a leaving coup

Sometimes, people just feel that it is time to move on. Below we see one of the men behind a mobile legend getting ready to take a walk into the sunset.

Tom Alexander is quitting Virgin Mobile as chief executive having scooped more than £20m since he led the mobile business to the stock market two years ago.

Mr Alexander, who quit his job at BT Cellnet in 1998 to start Virgin Mobile with Sir Richard Branson, said he was “bloody amazed” at his success, saying: “I could never have dreamt it back then.”

Virgin Mobile started with £100m of investment from its then-owners T-Mobile and Virgin Group. After a faltering start as a listed company, it is being taken over by cable giant NTL for almost £1bn.

Speculation that Mr Alexander would leave in the wake of the deal had been played down by the Virgin camp - despite him telling The Daily Telegraph last November that it would be harder for the company to keep its entrepreneurial spirit alive if a large predator took over…. Source:Telegraph
