More Fun with Windows Mobile 5.0

Now that I’m back from my business trip, I tried to re-install Pocket Informant onto my device that decided to crap out on me earlier this week. When I did, the joys of Microsoft’s new way have handling memory bit me in the arse.
I had about 5 MB left for program storage. When I tried to install PocketInformant, a 3.5 MB install, I was greeted with the warning that it could not proceed with the install further due to a “critical lack of space” at about 75% through install. I guess when you install an application, you’ll need at least double it’s foot print due to the lame CAB file having to reside on the devices program storage side of memory (instead of running programs which has the wonderful amount of 25 MB free!) So I was screwed! Ugh.
I finally, after repeated soft-resets, installed it to the miniSD card. All seemed well until I turned back on the device only 20 minutes later and gone was all my /Storage Card/Program Files again! AAAAAHHH!
Long story, short, I did a hard reset and re-established my Exchange Server settings. Within five minutes, all my contacts, date book, tasks and E-mail was back. Now that worked well. I was thankful for that at least.
I’m just about done re-installing the very bare minimum on my device now. Gone are the years of waste and fat I came to love with my iPAQ’s and i730. I guess in this day and age of cheep memory, 128 MB of program storage is too much to ask for…
