World Cup is giving mobile video a big kick

This should not be that much of a surprise, really. I mean think about it! The world cup has an enormous number of fans. Therefore the success the cup has had with mobile video really ought to have been expected.

BERLIN Mobile video will get a real- world workout at this year’s soccer World Cup, the world’s most watched sporting event, the executive in charge of multimedia at Nokia, the world’s largest cellphone maker, said Tuesday.

“It will be an important stimulant for the technology,” said Anssi Vanjoki, a Nokia executive vice president and general manager of its multimedia group.

Sales of Nokia’s video-ready N70 phone have already helped lift the company’s profit 21 percent in the first uarter as sales rose 29 percent to €9.5 billion, or $11.8 billion. Nokia, based in Espoo, Finland, with 35 percent of the global cellphone market, is selling phones at a record pace this year amid demand for high-speed handsets that surf the Web, take and even print photographs, and play streaming video….
