DiGi, Nokia tap mobile market with new game

I have been hearing predictions for sometime now that the mobile gaming market will eventually overtake both the PC and console gaming markets. At this point, I do not see this happening. However, if things continue on like they have been, setups like DiGi’s 3MOG could very well lead the way to a new gaming order.

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, via its partnership with Nokia Pte Ltd, has launched the world’s first mobile massively multiplayer online game (3MOG) to tap the booming local mobile gaming industry.

DiGi chief marketing officer Chee Pok Jin said the company targeted some 500,000 existing online gamers to subscribe to its new mobile data service but expected the take-up rate to be slow.

“We don’t have a timeframe to achieve the target but we are taking the challenge to migrate the heavy online users into the mobile frontier,” he said at the launch of the new 3MOG game HinterWars yesterday. The game was simultaneously launched in five Internet cafes nationwide.
