Intel Highlights New Mobile Chips

Intel is playing host to developers from around the world at San Francisco’s Moscone Center this week and it’s showing off a lot of new goodies. Promises Intel is making includes smaller, faster, and lower power consuming chips by next year.

Scheduled for 2007 release, the new Centrino chip made for notebooks will feature integrated WiMAX. With WiMAX, the new wide range wireless technology that promises to replace broadband technologies such as EV-DO and EDGE. Mobile warriors will be able to connect to the Internet without being limited to small areas of bandwidth such as coffee houses like todays Wi-Fi. True freedom of wireless surfing at last.

Speaking of Wi-Fi, the updated Intel chip will also offer 802.11n, the latest and greatest improvement to the most popular way to connect to the web while away from the office. While 802.11n has yet to become official, it is very close to becoming such and easily will have such certification by the IEEE group by years end.

Other interesting items showed off by Intel was a hard drive backup technology as well as the ability to watch broadcast digital TV on a concept notebook that Intel Corporation Executive Vice President Sean Maloney displayed for the thousands of developers at Moscone.

With the new dual-core CPU’s and wireless USB also upon us, this next year should be an exciting one for many mobile office workers and students alike. Intel hopes to retain its lead in the mobile computing market and with what it has shown off in the last two days alone, you can bet it will be tough for the competition to take over that lead.
