Wireless to Blast Past Fiber?

  • No Related Post

Donald Trump’s got the casinos, the real estate, the TV show, and now a wireless transmitter on top of Trump Towers in New York that will send a 90 minute video to another tower a mile away in 6 seconds. Ya, the guys got it all, doesn’t he?

GigaBeam is showing off its new point-to-point wireless technology dubbed “WiFiber”. You know, as in fiber optics. The really fast stuff. Quick to put another wireless format war dead in the air, GigaBeam notes this is not another WiFi or WiMaxx-like protocol. John Krzywicki, the company’s vice president of marketing, says it’s more specific for data delivery. A pure fiber wireless alternative.

To achieve the lighting fast speeds, the company employees just that, near visible light to piggy back its data on. Using the terahertz frequencies, means that this great and speedy signal is also susceptible to weather conditions such as fog which blocks light, thus hampering these mighty speeds. To solve this problem, GigaBeam transmits at 71-76, 81-86, and 92-95 gigahertz frequencies, which helps contain the signal and not become too degraded by weather conditions.

All in all, very interesting and one that makes me want to slap one of these towers on top of my house. Must be nice being Donald sometimes…
