I guess Google’s too busy making sure Chinese citizens can’t find stories on VPs shooting friends by accident while duck hutting to have enough resources to focus on San Francisco’s free city Wi-Fi deal. So today, Google’s partner spilled the beans onto the world, wired and wirelessly, and announced that it, EarthLink, would assist Google in submitting an RFP to the city of San Francisco.
Elated with the fact that Google and EarthLink were coming to together, Donald Berryman, president of EarthLink’s municipal networks unit, told the world today, “Customers shouldn’t be tied to their desks, or to a single provider, to get the Internet experience they want.” Berryman went on, stating, “Both EarthLink and Google recognize this and are attempting to provide great service and choice in San Francisco.”
Having some experience in this field, EarthLink is a good fit for Google to fall back on. With too much dark fiber and not enough experience, the folks back in Mountain View have made a good decision to let someone that knows what they’re doing handle this massive job. It also helps to hear good response from within the City — off the record of course — as well. It may be cold and windy most of the time in the San Francisco, but it’s about to warm up with some hot wireless signals real soon!
