Turn Your iPod into a Universal Remote

So you’ve got an iPod. You’ve got a few TV’s, too. You wished this digital hub Jobs keeps ranting about would include using your iPod on the TV, huh? Dude, don’t wait for Steve, get Griffin to help you out. Yes, Griffin as in the company that makes Total Remote. You know, the little IR thingy that plugs into an ear phone jack and then emits remote control signals? Well with some help from O’Reilly, you can now get any iPod to change the TV to Bill O’Reilly with a simple press of your ClickWheel.

O’Reilly has a resource on its web site that takes a page (or two) from its Hacking iPod and iTunes that gives you step-by-step instructions on how to turn any iPod into a universal remote. It takes some work but not too much if you’re just looking for the basics such as power on/off, channel up and down, and volume control. If you’ve got the time, however, you can basically fully replicate your remote onto your iPod. And the way I see it, I don’t know why you couldn’t share your hard work and post the finished hacked files on your site for all us to use. :)
