Linksys’ WRT54G is probably the most popular wireless access point on the market. Linksys claims they sell “hundreds of thousands” per month! One draw to the in-expensive wireless router is its operating system, Linux. With it, the WRT54G running on the open source OS, hackers were able to add features Linksys “forgot” such as RADIUS and VoIP QoS (voice-over-IP quality-of-service.) Last month, however, Linksys went with a smaller footprint and started using VxWorks. No more hacking…well, at least easy hacking.
Oddly enough, Linksys is bring back the “original” WRT54G in form of adding an L to the end of the model number which stands for Linux. “We still wanted to have a Linux SKU for the Linux audience. In general, we want to make sure our Linux community is protected,” Linksys’ director of product marketing, Mani Dhillon, told LinuxDevices.com. Linksys hopes to sell about 10,000 of the L units, “if we’re lucky,” Dhillon said. The new-old AP will cost you about $70 and will easily be found at Amazon and most geeky outlets on the web.
