Since hitting mainstream use in Europe in 1999, SMS has quickly grown to an estimated 1 trillion (1000 billion) SMS messages sent worldwide this year.
SMS has also become a lucrative business for operators. Worldwide, during 2004, SMS generated revenues in excess of $30 Billion US Dollars. This revenue still grows due to innovative uses in mature markets, such as TV voting and information services. The majority of the future growth comes the emerging markets of Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
Will SMS be replaced by newer messaging technology?
As various new technologies are emerging, it is likely that some SMS applications will be replaced by RFID or GPS communication systems. By 2010, other messaging technologies will probably start to replace SMS in mature markets, but this is not going to happen in emerging markets.
No other non-verbal form of communication in the world is used by so many individuals across so many countries, and no other messaging medium is experiencing such rapid expansion of its user base.
