Yahoo! + Google To Release New Mobile Features

  • No Related Post

Do you have a Google or Yahoo! account? If yes, you potentially are in luck. Both Yahoo! and Google announced that they will be rolling out some new features for mobile phone users. It seems as if they are basically trying to close the gap between a desktop computer and a cell phone. Google is/will be making some of their many services cell phone friendly. Yahoo!, on the other hand, is partnering with SBC Communications (in the United States) that will allow Yahoo! users to link with their address books and preferences (just to name a couple). A side note to this story is that, for the past five or so years, basic Internet functions were available on mobile devices. Now, however, carriers such as Sprint, Nextel, and Cingular Wireless are working towards having capable wireless Internet speeds in excess of 500 Kbps.

Top Tech News reports:

“Basic Internet services have been available on wireless devices for more than five years, although with some limitations. Until recently, wireless access was just slightly faster than dial-up-modem speeds. Yet mobile carriers are moving to offer wireless Internet service that can achieve basic DSL speeds of 500 Kbps or more.”

On a more personal note, I think that the so called “gap” between mobiles and computers can only be closed so much. Despite the fact that I own both a BlackBerry and a Treo smartphone, I still think that there’s nothing like typing an e-mail on a good ol’ 101 keyed keyboard.
